Mobile learning is learning happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies. In other words mobile learning decreases limitation of learning location with the mobility of general portable devices. Mobile has its privilege as well as its disadvantages; however, mobile learning is still a debate in k-12 education.

History

The idea of using mobile devices to assist learning was formally conceptualized a surprisingly long time ago. Alan Kay’s Dynabook, in the early 1970s, first attempted to design a computer-mediated mobile learning platform. Although the Dynabook was a concept, the ripples of the project lead to Kay’s work at Xerox Paolo-Alto Research Labs.
As the time-line shows below, mobile learning is not an idea from one person at one place, but a global trend for learning, a concept that learning can possibly occur in any place any time.

So we're sure you all as ETEC master's students have had to use Laulima in your course studies right? In this blog, we talk about Laulima and other CMS (Course Management Systems) which incorporate instructional modules, or "learning objects" (hint hint: our final project in this class is about this lol) to teach the intended learners. Laulima, being accessed through the web, and all its online learning modules, make it a mobile learning platform! Check this blog out to see many other examples of mobile learning uses and concepts.

Tutorials

Today, we're going to demonstrate practical ways of utilizing the resources that make up mobile learning for the everyday student. We're going to show you two youtube tutorials on technologies that go hand in hand with promoting mobile learning: Skype for online and mobile conferencing, and iTunes and Podcasts, for accessing audio and sometimes video materials on the go.

In the first tutorial, we'll show you how to use Skype and Aim on your MacBook laptop to teleconference with your professors or peers in meetings for class projects, etc.

In the second tutorial, we'll show you how to download an educational podcast from iTunes to your MP3 player.
