The idea behind Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles is to address the needs of all learners at the front end of the instructional design of a course, rather than as individual students with special needs enter a class. VoiceThreads address all three of its core principles, multiple means of representation, multiple means for action and expression, and multiple means of engagement. By addressing these principles, instructors meet the needs of a broad range of learners, not just those with special needs. View an example of how VoiceThreads can address these principles:

This VoiceThread provides multiple means of representation and multiple means for action and expression:
  • alternatives for auditory information -  instructor uses a webcam to deliver instruction and video to deliver content.
  • Learners use the webcam to carry on a conversation.
